Paving in a Historic Moravian Borough
Asphalt paving in Nazareth means working in one of the oldest towns in the valley. Nazareth was founded in 1740 by Moravian immigrants on land bought from George Whitefield, and Nazareth Hall, built in 1754, became a boarding school in 1759. C. F. Martin & Company, the guitar maker, moved here in 1839. Today the borough has 6,053 residents (2020 census) on about 1.6 square miles at an elevation of 492 feet.
Older streets and lots
Historic centers mean narrow lots, older homes close to the street, and driveways that were often added long after the houses were built. Many are narrow and squeezed between buildings, and many have been patched and overlaid more times than anyone remembers. We check how high the surface sits at the garage and the sidewalk before recommending another layer. Often the right move is to remove the old asphalt and rebuild.
Cement country
By the 1960s the borough was ringed by three big cement makers, Essroc (once Coplay Cement), Hercules and Penn-Dixie. That industry followed the limestone. Pennsylvania American Water notes that sinkholes are common in Pennsylvania's karst terrain and that stormwater soaking through cracked pavement can play a role. Good drainage and keeping cracks sealed are sensible on any driveway around here.
Roads
Nazareth had 22.48 miles of public roads as of 2016: 17.24 maintained by the borough and 5.24 by PennDOT. PA 248 runs along the southern edge of the borough on Easton Road, and PA 191 runs southwest to northeast through it. Driveways connecting to those state routes need a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit for new or changed connections. On borough streets, we check the borough's requirements before work at the curb.
Climate
Nazareth’s January mean is about 28.1 degrees and its July mean about 73.4, a touch colder than the river cities. That means plenty of freeze-thaw cycles each winter. Fall crack filling is worth doing every year.
Commercial and church lots
Nazareth has many church, school and small business lots. Overlays, patching, crack filling, sealing and restriping are the common jobs, and we schedule around services and business hours.
Removal versus overlay
On older borough driveways, we check how many layers are already there. If the surface is already well above the garage floor or sidewalk, another overlay will make drainage worse. In that case we remove and rebuild.

Nazareth Questions
My driveway is on Easton Road. Does PennDOT need to approve work?
Easton Road carries PA 248. Building or changing a driveway connection to it requires a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit. We check before scheduling.
Can you work around Sunday services at our church?
Yes. We schedule paving, sealing and striping so the lot is open when you need it.
My driveway is narrow and between two houses. Can you pave it?
Yes, with smaller equipment and careful edge work.
How often should I seal?
Every few years once the asphalt has cured, with crack filling each fall.
How do you decide between overlay and replacement?
We look at the base condition and how high the surface already sits. If the base is failing or the layers are too high, replacement is the better choice.
Do you pave near the cement plants?
Yes. We work throughout Nazareth and the surrounding townships, including lots that see truck traffic.
Do you seal church lots?
Yes, along with crack filling and restriping, scheduled around services.
